Now that there is only a week left of November, it’s time for some holiday cheer!
Stores are already setting up their displays, the radio stations are starting to play “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas,” and you’ve pulled your winter gear out from the back of your closet, ready to brace the forthcoming snow (at least it hasn’t gotten to DC yet. Can’t say the same for Buffalo!).
It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
The best part of the holidays is not only the music, snow, and chunky knits. It’s also a time for exchanging gifts with the people you love the most. I’ve compiled a list of the top five gifts for the Feminist Feline in your life. They’re all things I wouldn’t mind getting myself. 😛 (I hope that Santa reads my blog!)
So hear it is, the top five gifts for the feline-friendly feminist in your life!
Yes Please by Amy Poehler
Why? Because Amy Poehler. No explanation is needed, but her organization Smart Girls at the Party (which encourages young girls to ignore harmful cultural messages that tell them to value their looks … Read more
I can’t believe I graduate from college in one month. When I made the decision to graduate a semester early, I didn’t realize how sad I would be to not have anymore classes. As my friends spent this week registering for the next semester, I was feeling very nostalgic. There are all these classes that I wanted to take and never did! However, I am happy that I don’t have to do all the work!
I am very lucky to be staying in DC next semester rather than going home (yay lease agreements!) Don’t get me wrong, I love home but I don’t want to miss my last semester with all my friends. But the big reason why I’m staying in DC is to get a job.
Oh, hello real world.
I haven’t spent much time this semester applying to jobs because I’ve been focusing on doing well in my classes (I’m so close to Magna Cum Laude status!). I’m hoping to get a job in DC, either as a communications assistant for a progressive organization or as a writer for a progressive … Read more
There are a multitude of sexist songs out there. From Robin Thicke’s infamous “Blurred Lines” to pretty much everything by Kanye, objectifying women and classifying them as less than men is a common theme in many popular songs.
But all those songs are feminist anthems compared to a new song by Lil Jon and Red Foo (one half of everyone’s favorite “band,” LMFAO). “Literally I Can’t” is not only a sexist piece of trash, but it’s also literally (see what I did there?) trash.
The video depicts Lil Jon and Redfoo going wild a college party (big surprise, I know) and a group of attractive, thin girls wearing sorority letters barge into the party with lots of attitude and disinterest in the raucous party. After the girls object Lil Jon and Redfoo’s advances, the men tell them to “shut the f**k up.”
I’m sorry, did we just time warp back to the 1950s? Have we made no progress in women’s rights? According to Lil Jon and Redfoo, apparently we haven’t.
I couldn’t even get halfway through the music video. Not only because I was disgusted by the misogyny, but also because it’s … Read more
